STOP! Just stop…

And take it in. Even just for a moment.

On Saturday, as part of my training plan for the 29029 Everesting Challenge, I summited Mt. Tam three times. And while it would be easy to focus on the facts that:

⬇️ The roughly 7,000 feet of elevation I gained is still 22,000 feet short of what I’ll need to accomplish the first weekend in June

⏱️ The time on my feet was only ~27% of what I anticipate at Sun Valley

…with each summit, I tried to pause for just a moment to soak in the view and recognize what I’d just accomplished. It gave me the strength to go at it again.

With my executive coaching clients, this was a theme last week. One executive kept focusing on how much they hadn’t accomplished yet and kept expressing that they “wanted to be successful” - I had to step in and force a pause. They had also just shared that in the annual review process, they had received one of the highest performance review scores available. In one of the “big tech” organizations in the Bay Area. Even being an executive in that company means occupying a seat in a rarefied field. And they were in the top percentile in terms of performance.

While there was indeed still more this person wanted to accomplish, they had never taken a moment to take it in. And recognize that they are ARE successful.

💪🏻 It was a powerful moment of seeing oneself.

And while being seen and recognized by others is rare and powerful, I’d argue it’s even more rare and powerful that we take the moments to stop, take in the view and recognize how far we’ve come.

Not to stop and become complacent. But to see ourselves and gather ourselves with confidence for what’s ahead.
